Our Administration believes that parks and recreation facilities are the heart of our community, providing spaces for families to gather, children to play, and everyone to enjoy the natural beauty of Hawai'i County.

Significant Investments in Park Upgrades

​

Since taking office, we have made significant strides in enhancing the accessibility and inclusivity of our parks across the island. We've successfully completed 10 critical ADA improvements, including upgrades at:

​

• Francis Wong Stadium

• Hilo Bayfront

• Richardson's Ocean Park

• Paauilo Park

• Papaaloa Park

• Kahuku Park

• Naalehu Community Center

• Pahala Ballfield

• Disappearing Sands Beach Park

• Panaewa Zoo and Equestrian Complex

Building on this progress, we are set to complete three more major ADA projects this year at Akolekole Gulch Park, the NAS pool, and the Pahala pool. These efforts reflect our ongoing dedication to creating environments that everyone can access and enjoy.

Increased Maintenance Budget

​

Our administration has significantly increased the maintenance budget for all 302 park facilities. From a modest $450,000 at the beginning of our term, the budget has grown to over $4 million annually. In this year’s budget, we propose an additional increase of $1 million to further support our parks. This increase is a testament to our commitment to preserving and enhancing these community assets.

Projects Underway

Major projects currently underway include:

• Development of Puunui in the Kamakanui Playground

• Field upgrades in Waikoloa

• A new community center and park upgrades at Waiakea Uka Park in Hilo

• Emergency pool repairs in various locations

• Rodeo arena resurfacing in Honokaa

• Skateboard park upgrades in Volcano Park

• Resurfacing at Billy Kenoi District Park in Pahoa

• Construction of new pickleball courts in Kailua-Kona

Ensuring Safety and Accessibility

​

Our commitment extends to maintaining the safety and accessibility of our public spaces. As part of our ongoing Parks Rules Enforcement operations, we will continue to address harmful and illegal activities that jeopardize the well-being of our keiki, kupuna, and park goers. Our parks are intended for the enjoyment of all community members and must remain welcoming and safe for everyone.

Enhancing Quality of Life

These investments and improvements not only enhance the recreational opportunities for our residents but also significantly improve the overall quality of life. By ensuring our parks are well-maintained and accessible, we foster a sense of community and well-being that enriches the lives of all who call Hawai'i Island home.

Looking Ahead

 

Beyond facilities repair and maintenance, we continue to plan for new facilities that will substantially impact our communities' health and well-being. This includes planning, designing, and conducting necessary environmental assessments for significant projects such as:

• Kealakehe Regional Park

• Hilo and Kahuku Skate Parks

• Lapahoehoe Boat Ramp

• Papaaloa Playcourts

• Isaac Hale Beach Park Improvements

• Hawaiian Paradise Park Master Plan

We anticipate that many of these projects will break ground in the coming year.
