Honoring and Preserving Hawaiian Culture in Hawai'i County

Our administration is committed to honoring and preserving the rich Hawaiian culture that is integral to our community. Through various initiatives and programs, we strive to foster a deep connection between the land and its people, and to educate and engage our residents in the traditions and practices of Hawaiian culture.

Establishment of the Indigenous Data Science Division

Within the Department of Research and Development, we have established the Indigenous Data Science Division, led by Director Doug Adams and Deputy Frecia Cevallos. This division focuses on leveraging indigenous knowledge and data to inform and transform governance on Hawai'i Island, ensuring that our policies and practices reflect the values and traditions of the Hawaiian culture.

"Pehea Ka ʻĀina? Ola Ka ʻĀina!" Initiative

Led by indigenous data specialists Hokulani Fortunato and Malia Silva-Meeken, the "Pehea Ka ʻĀina? Ola Ka ʻĀina!" initiative aims to foster a deep connection between the land and its people. This program focuses on transforming governance by integrating traditional Hawaiian knowledge and practices into our decision-making processes, promoting sustainability and stewardship of our natural resources.

"Kuʻikahi Naʻauao" Initiative

The "Kuʻikahi Naʻauao" initiative provides county employees with opportunities to learn about Hawaiian culture through activities such as lei-making, hula, oli (chanting), and significant events in Hawaiian history. This initiative not only educates employees about Hawaiian traditions but also fosters a deeper appreciation and understanding of the culture.
